In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, SMEs are faced with the imperative need to embrace digitalization. This very subject took center stage at the recent COMESA-MCCI Digital Financial Inclusion workshop, held at The Ravenala Attitude Hotel, Balaclava. Among the attendees was Deesha Gungah, representing ProCare Health Services Ltd, who found the event to be an enriching and invigorating experience.

Notable personalities, including the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun, the President of the COMESA Business Council and Vice-President of the African Business Council, Mr. Marday Venkatasamy, and the President of the MCCI, Mrs. Namita Jagarnath Hardowar, graced the opening ceremony with their presence.

For Deesha Gungah, the words of President Roopun resonated profoundly. He stressed the importance of innovation for SMEs to stay relevant in the ever-changing technological era. Digital Financial Inclusion, he emphasized, is a lifeline for businesses, offering alternative funding access and reshaping the financial landscape. President Roopun also highlighted the pivotal role of SMEs in global economic progress, urging them to embrace digital services like e-commerce and e-payment systems to tackle international challenges effectively.

President Roopun’s call for exploring new sectors, investing in vocational training, and promoting entrepreneurial education alongside digitalization struck a chord with Deesha Gungah. She noted the transformative potential of collaboration, emphasizing Mauritius’ commitment to cooperation as a driver of growth and empowerment for SMEs.

Mr. Marday Venkatasamy, the President of the COMESA Business Council, highlighted the synergy between CBC and MCCI in their shared commitment to empower SMEs on the path to economic prosperity. He emphasized the CBC’s role in supporting the business community by addressing global challenges such as climate change, advancing financial inclusion, adopting new technologies, and progressing toward digitalization.

Mrs. Namita Jagarnath Hardowar, President of the MCCI, aptly described SMEs as catalysts for invention, innovation, and the development of new ideas and technologies. She underlined the significant increase in women entrepreneurs in Mauritius and the need for ongoing support to provide them access to markets, training, networking opportunities, and prospects in the realm of digital entrepreneurship.

For Deesha Gungah, Director of ProCare Health Services Ltd, expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the COMESA-MCCI Digital Financial Inclusion workshop. The Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB) organized a half-day seminar in Moka, as part of World Standards Day 2023, focusing on the theme “Shared vision for a better world.” The event was attended by the Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs, and Cooperatives, Mr. Soomilduth Bholah, and featured the Chairperson of the Standards Council, Mr. Sanjiv Mulloo, and Dr. Anne Ancia from the World Health Organization, among other distinguished guests.

Minister Bholah highlighted the importance of international standards in ensuring safety, sustainability, and improved global healthcare. He emphasized that standards play a vital role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in healthcare and well-being. Standards provide a framework for digital health technologies, research, development, and healthcare device maintenance, contributing to effective policy-making and regulation.

The Minister acknowledged the Mauritius Standards Bureau as a pivotal hub for businesses to align with regulatory compliance and harmonize their practices with established standards. He also mentioned the ISO 7101 standard for healthcare organization management, aimed at assisting organizations in navigating healthcare complexities.

Dr. Ancia commended Mauritius’s progress in healthcare standards over the past two decades but emphasized the need for further improvement, sensitization campaigns, and prevention programs to combat non-communicable diseases and reduce mortality rates.
